David Maister and managing people

Been listening to David Maister's podcast which I really enjoy: http://davidmaister.com/podcasts/

David is a management guru and coach and to date I have found his advice to be more practical than any other people management advice I've read or listened to. Here are some essential points that I find most meaningful in his recent podcasts:

- you cannot be a good manager unless you have it in you to put your ego second and that of your employee first. (Interestingly, using this as the main measure he concludes that he himself is not fit to be a manager)
- you can only manage by helping people grow and achieve THEIR goals
- managing people takes an incredible amount of patience and persistence and requires someone who can be at once most demanding and most supportive.
